There are four key steps to safely create a solid campfire.
1. How to pick your burning site
a. Figure out if the campground has a fire pit or fire ring area.
b. Avoid areas at sites that are in dry or hazardous conditions.
c. If pits are allowed at the campground, look for a spot that is at least 15 feet from trees, shrubs, tents, or other flammable objects.
2. How to prepare your campfire pit
a. Fill it with small pieces of dry wood. Do not tear off branches from living trees.
b. Place your spare firewood away from the fire.
c. Have a container of water and a shovel nearby.
3. How to build your campfire
a. There are three types of wood you can use: Tinder, Kindling, and Fuel
b. Pile a few handfuls of tinder in the center of the fire pit
c. Add some kindling around/over the tinder so that it forms a tent shape
d. Light the tinder on fire with a match or lighter
e. Continue adding more tinder as the fire grows
f. Blow lightly at the bottom of the fire
g. Add kindling and firewood to keep the fire going
h. Make sure the fire is not too large and you have it under control
4. How to maintain your campfire
a. Once you have a good fire going, keep adding fuel to keep it going
b. Don’t let it get to big
c. If there are any children or pets nearby, make sure they are being supervised
d. Do not ever leave the fire unattended
